THE GROUNDS

Space to breath

Set within twenty acres of private grounds on the Isle of Bute, Kames is a place to slow down, explore and enjoy the outdoors. Wander beneath the estate’s mature trees, cross the lawns to the walled garden, or simply find a quiet spot and take in the views.

The estate welcomes lots of visiting wildlife with many species of birds sharing the grounds with rabbits, deer and hedgehogs. As evening falls, look out for owls and bats overhead. With so much space to enjoy, even when all eight cottages are occupied, Kames never feels crowded.

A SHELTERED SANCTUARY

The Walled Garden

The Victorian walled garden is one of the most special places at Kames – a peaceful, sheltered space enclosed by old stone walls and shaped by generations of planting.

Its wide lawns are surrounded by established borders, espaliered fruit trees and seasonal flowers, creating a garden that changes throughout the year. At its heart, the beautifully renovated Victorian glasshouse brings an important part of the garden’s history back to life.

The garden is productive as well as beautiful. Fruit, vegetables and herbs are grown here throughout the season, with guests invited to enjoy what is ready to pick during their stay.

There is plenty of room simply to enjoy the surroundings too – find a quiet corner with a book, bring a picnic to the lawn, or spend a summer afternoon playing giant chess, dominoes or garden games.

Whether full of family games and laughter or wonderfully peaceful, the walled garden is a place to wander, discover and linger.
